Senior Emily Trevino-Medina Awarded Coveted Lupe Gamboa Scholarship

The SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund is proud to announce that senior Emily Trevino-Medina has been awarded the prestigious Lupe Gamboa Scholarship. Emily, a dedicated student and active member of her community, plans to attend Gonzaga University to major in Sociology and Criminology, with the long-term goal of earning her Juris Doctor (J.D.).

Emily would like to express her heartfelt gratitude to her mother, Maria T. Medina, for her resilience, and to her outstanding teachers and advisors: Joyce Stark, John Hulick, Edward Martin, and John Kranz. She also acknowledges the support of her siblings: Misael (37), Deyber (36), and Selena (29), who have all inspired her in her academic journey.

 

Throughout her high school career, Emily has demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as the 2023-2024 Key Club President and the 2024-Present Science Club Publicist. She has actively participated in various clubs and activities, including DECA, the Latino Culture Club, and the Science Fair, and has played a significant role in initiatives such as Evergreen Girls State and Link Crew.

 

Emily has donated over 100 hours of community service, participating in initiatives like “The Freeze Out” for Domestic Violence awareness, Santa’s Workshop, Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society, and the Cinco de Mayo Parade. Her dedication to service has earned her multiple accolades, including the Key Club President Award and recognitions for creativity and presentation.

In her scholarship application, Emily articulated her vision: “I want to become a resource beyond just monetary value, race, gender, background, or any other factors. I am an educated individual with prospects and a goal that will hopefully make the world a little better, and receiving this scholarship would definitely make my world better.”

 

As Emily looks toward her future, she stands as an exemplary model of commitment to education and community service, embodying the values that the Lupe Gamboa Scholarship aims to represent.


ABOUT THE LUPE GAMBOA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Born in Texas, Lupe Gamboa made his way to the vibrant Sunnyside area in the late 1940s, where he proudly began his education in 1st grade. A proud graduate of Sunnyside High School in 1964, Lupe’s legacy lives on through an Endowed Scholarship established by his friends, classmates, and colleagues in his honor.
