Sunnyside High School Senior Julian Estrada Named Recipient of Prestigious Lupe Gamboa Scholarship
The SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund is proud to announce that Julian Estrada, a standout senior at Sunnyside High School, has been awarded the esteemed Lupe Gamboa Scholarship in recognition of his academic excellence, community service, and commitment to making a difference.
Julian, the son of Eric Magallon and Ed Estrada of Sunnyside, has distinguished himself both in and out of the classroom. Graduating with a 3.70 GPA, Julian has been accepted directly into the University of Washington’s Informatics program, where he will also participate in the UW Honors Program. He has earned accolades such as the Honors Undergraduate Scholar Award, Dean’s List, and completed both his high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree simultaneously through the Running Start program.
Driven by a passion for technology and human-centered design, Julian plans to pursue a career in software development. “My goal is to design digital experiences that give opportunities and make it easier for people to navigate systems that are often confusing or limited, especially in rural areas,” he shared in his application. Julian’s focus on accessibility and real community needs reflects the values embodied by the Lupe Gamboa Scholarship.
Julian credits and recognizes educators Francisco Ramirez, Stephanie Frish, and Adrian Martinez for their mentorship and guidance during his high school journey.
Beyond academics, Julian has been a dedicated member of the Prevention Club, the National Honor Society, the Latino Culture Club, the Math Club, and the Science Club. He has given back to his community through service at Grandview Assisted Living, as a lifeguard and youth instructor at the Sunnyside Community Pool, and as a vocalist and youth leader at Cornerstone Church. His leadership and compassion have touched many lives throughout Sunnyside.
Julian expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Scholarship Committee, stating, “Thank you for supporting Sunnyside High School graduates.”
Julian is inspired by his favorite passage: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
ABOUT THE LUPE GAMBOA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Born in Texas, Lupe Gamboa moved to the vibrant Sunnyside area in the late 1940s, where he proudly began 1st grade. A proud graduate of Sunnyside High School in 1964, Lupe’s legacy lives on through an Endowed Scholarship established by his friends, classmates, and colleagues in his honor.
